in the cup: this drinks closer to a washed Ethiopian than to most Colombians, with honey, lemon peel, and rhubarb running through it.

Details
Juice Box is a washed Chiroso from a group of producers in Urrao, Colombia, and one of the washed coffees we keep coming back to. It’s clean and bright, with honey, lemon peel and rhubarb, and a character that reminds us more of a washed Ethiopian than a typical Colombian. You might remember this one as Honeymoon. We renamed it when Honey Burst joined the line-up because two honey names were causing a little too much confusion on the packing floor.
Juice Box is our name for Las Perlitas Chiroso, a community lot built from small lots grown by several producers around Urrao, Colombia. Each coffee is cupped and selected before being combined into a larger lot. They’re washed coffees, but fermentation varies from producer to producer, which gives the final lot plenty of fruit while keeping the clarity we love about Chiroso. In the cup, we find blood orange, rhubarb and honey.
The coffees come from small producers around Urrao, Antioquia, with farms sitting between 1900 and 2300 masl. Each small lot is cupped individually before being selected for Las Perlitas, allowing coffees that would otherwise be too small to export alone to become part of the larger lot.
Chiroso, a variety that has become closely associated with Urrao. It was initially thought to be related to Caturra, but genetic testing has since linked Chiroso to Ethiopian landrace genetics. In Juice Box, we find the floral, citrusy character that keeps bringing us back to it.
Washed. Processing varies between the producers contributing to the lot, with fermentation generally lasting 24 to 48 hours and sometimes up to 72. Once washed, the coffees are dried for around 7 to 14 days before the individual lots are selected and combined.
Low. The individual producers use their own variations of washed processing, with fermentation followed by washing and drying. There are no added ingredients or heavily manipulated processing stages, and the final cup stays clean and clear.
